The HU Cheerleading Squad Keeps Raising the Bar
Huntington Cheerleading Goes Well Beyond Cheers and Reaches a New Plateau with This Year’s Squad
 |

It’s a Competitive Sport

In case you didn’t notice, you can’t just wear the suit and walk out on the floor to be a cheerleader at HU. It‘s a demanding sport. Tryouts, held in the spring and fall, determine who’s on the squad we see at the games and who will participage in other activities during the year.

The selection process looks for athletic ability, attitude, appearance, leadership traits and enthusiasm. In addition, applicants must introduce an original chant, demonstrate a previously learned cheer, and show their athletic agility in a variety of dance moves, jumps and stunts.

Year-Long Training Regimen

The demands don’t end with the try-outs. There’s twice-a-week practices starting in September and continuing to the end of the season. Conditioning is a requirement, as well as learning the cheers, chants, stunts, tumbling and doing those other things most of us can’t do.

The members (Group Photo) serve the Meet-the-Team Dinner in October and participate in community services. They hold an annual “cheer clinic” for girls age 4-14 each year; we saw this year’s participants during half time of the Saint Xavier basketball game on November 22.

An Outstanding (and Young) Group

This year’s Cheer Squad had 11 women and 5 men:

W: Anna Farmer (Fr.), Findlay, OH
Lauren Funicelli (Jr.), Colorado Springs, CO
Emily Knapp (So.), Pittsboro, IN
Samantha Lehman (Fr.), Kendallville, IN
Cynthia Morton (Fr.), Phippsburg, ME
Cassie Screeton (So.), Rochester, IN
Katie Sroufe (So.), Claypool, IN
Savannah Swope (Fr.), Ashland, OH
Ashley Upchurch (Fr.), New Castle, IN
Kelci VanDam (So.), Muncie, IN
Holly Wagner (Fr.), Huntington, IN

M: Andrew Goodwin (So.), Fort Wayne, IN
Dan Koch (Fr.), Chesterton, IN
Bobby Schultz (Jr.), Huntington, IN
Jordan Steele (So.), Holland, MI
Gage Waltz (Fr.), Rochester, IN

This HU cheering squad deserves recognition. It takes hours of practice to execute a three-high human pyramid, not to mention courage to fall backwards from that height (hoping someone is back there to catch you). Thanks, HU Cheer Squad. You were awesome this year!
