Tyler Shively Sets Records
New NAIA D2 Record and New HU Individual Records

Alex Kock’s Number Retired
Only the Second HU Basketball Number Ever Retired
Consecutive Free Throws: 70

As a freshman, Tyler Shively began a lengthy string of consecutive free throws. He made 54 free throws in a row last season, starting at Bethel on January 2, 2008. His string of consecutive free throws continued to the end of last season, putting in two at the second MCC Tournament game on March 1, 2008.

That was a significant accomplishment. His 54 in a row broke the HU men’s basketball record of 46 consecutive free throws without a miss set by Galen Mast in 1995.  But Tyler wasn’t finished yet.

When the 2008-09 season began, Shively continued his string of consecutive free throws and kept it going until Nov. 29, 2008, in a 20-point win over Judson. Tyler finally misfired in that game, ending his string at 70.

Tyler Shively That number not only shattered the Huntington individual record; it also broke the NAIA D2 record of 60 consecutive free throws set by Dan Rough of Whitman College (WA) twelve years earlier in 1997.

Tyler’s streak of 70 consecutive free throws spanned 20 games in which had just one game of double-digit free throws (10). There was one game of eight, four games of six, and one game of five; the rest came one or two per game. Shively ended at #2 in NAIA D2 making 88.5%.

Three-Point Shooting: 50.5%

Apparently, one school (and national) record was not enough; Shively also set a new school record for three-point field goal percentage this season. He shot 50.5% from beyond the arc, blowing away the 48.7% mark set by Kyle Ganton during the 2005-06 season.

Tyler made at least one three-point shot in 20 of his 26 games this season. He put in five three-pointers in three games (Shawnee State, Bethel and Marian). He made four three-pointers versus Judson, and put in three three-point shots in four additional games.

At the end of the regular season, Tyler had made 50 of 94 three-point field goal attempts for a percentage of 53.2%, making him the #1 three-point shooter in all NAIA D2 at the time. In two MCC Tournament games, Shively went one of seven causing his season-ending average to be 50.5%. That still ranked #1 in NAIA D2.

Huntington’s #42 is Retired

Alex Kock played basketball at Huntington for just three years, but that’s all he needed to become the fifth most prolific scorer in the school’s history. Alex graduated from DeKalb High School and then played his freshman year at Wright State University (Dayton, OH) as a walk-on.

As a sophomore at Huntington, Alex averaged 18.3 points and 8.3 rebounds a game. He was named the MCC Player of the Year and an NAIA Second Team All-American.

In his junior year, Kock averaged 21.2 points and 8.4 rebounds a game, as the team compiled a 32-6 record and went to the NAIA tournament chamionship game.
Alex repeated as the MCC Player of the Year and was named NAIA First-Team All-American.

As a senior, Kock averaged a double-double, getting 23.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. For the third time, he was named MCC Player of the Year and repeated as an NAIA First-Team All-American.

At the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Alex was named the NAIA D2 Player of the Year, the only such honor given to an HU basketball player in the school’s history.
Alex Kock
In 104 games, Kock scored 2,182 points, averaging 21.0 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists over his three-year playing career, and he shot 53.4% from the field.

Alex Kock and retired coach Steve Platt are the only two basketball players in the history of the school to have their numbers retired.
