2006 Graduate, NAIA Character Award Winner, and HU 1,000 Point Club Member Returns as an Assistant Coach
On August 28, Head Coach Ty Platt announced that Chase Verba would join the staff as an Assistant Coach.
Chase is the 25th all-time leading scorer at Huntington (1,211 points) and was twice named an All-MCC Conference player, and a member of a very successful class which won three MCC Titles and two MCC Tournament Championships.
REACTION TO THE NEWS
When asked about his new position, Chase replied with his usual enthusiasm, "I'm very excited to be helping out Coach Ty Platt and be back as part of the team. I had hoped for this and the right pieces just fell into place."
"My parents and close friends were also excited to hear about it," he added. "They know it's a great opportunity for me; it's something that I'm going to really enjoy. They also know how much I care and love HU basketball."
LIKE THE OTHER HU COACHES
It's no secret that Huntington doesn't have a full-time coaching staff; every position is part-time. Head Coach Ty Platt will continue teaching at Norwell HS; Mark Green is the Director of Columbia City Parks and Recreation; and Chase will keep his "day job" as a sales representative for Capital Insurance and Financial Services.
"My full-time job is selling insurance," he says. "So if anyone is in need of coverage, I would love to offer my services and save them some money on insurance."
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
Chase says his job responsibilities are simple. "I'll be doing whatever Coach Ty Platt wants me to do," he says. In particular, that will include practice sessions, recruiting,
connecting with the players and taking care of team chemistry. Let's hope the job doesn't include shaving heads as he did in his senior year (see 2006 photo at left).
Chase is very optimistic about the 2008-09 season. He says, "HU has a great group of returning players, along with a couple of new players that will
definitely make an impact." He adds, "We expect to be competing for the MCC Conference Title and will do everything we can to earn a trip to Branson."
Coach Platt says he expects Chase to spend a lot of time working with the big men in practice. In addition, he says, "I also expect that he will play a big part in helping us recruit the top-notch players we need."
It will be good to see Chase involved in the program agina. As Platt says, "Chase is a fierce competitor; he'll fit in real well on the staff with Mark Green and me."
